Heat and Mufflers

Riding season still is a bit away for me but I am certainly never far in my thinking from my bike.
Recently I have been thinking about engine heat, "blued" exhaust pipes and stock mufflers.
I noticed last summer than on a long highway run - say 150 kms at speeds of up to 115 kmph - the engine got hot. Not unacceptably hot but warm enough that adding a bit of oil took a relatively long time for the engine to cool enough to be able to get the filler cap off without burned hands.
Over the course of the 5K I rode last summer, the exhausted went from silver to gold and just the beginnings of blue showing from heat. I have always through that this change of color was acceptable in fact kind of liked it as a sign of a long rider attitude.
I wonder if anyone who has modified their exhaust by adding a super trapp muffler has any thoughts on two questions:
1. Does your engine on a long highway run appear to run cooler - it may because the supertrap is not nearly as flow restrictive as the stock muffler?
2. Has someone with a higher milage Savage, any comments on the color change in the pipe being a bit slower with the Super Trapp?

Keep the rubber side down
